Change is now an almost continuous part of everyday life, and business is no exception. Every system, however carefully analysed, designed and implemented, will be faced by changing business requirements. The supporting processes and systems will be changed for a variety of reasons. Computer hardware and operating systems will be updated or changed completely. Databases grow larger and more complex. New requirements appear because of changes in the market, or changes in products or services offered.

Hence every system, whether manual or automated, paper-based or computer- based, will need to be updated or changed at some point. Every system needs to be maintained and its users and administrators need to be supported to extract the maximum benefit. Hopefully, the designers and implementers of each system will have allowed sufficient flexibility so that the system can be readily extended or adapted to fit the evolving requirements; but eventually more major internal work will usually be needed.
