The customer is a specialist supplier of very high specification alloys, typically used for turbine blades and many other critical applications. The alloys that they make are very tightly controlled, both in their chemistry and in the sources of each of the many raw materials that are acceptable for each customer and application. They needed a system that would allow them to maintain their own processes and controls, while also giving them the best possible mix of raw materials to meet their customers exacting specifications and rules with the lowest cost. We implemented and maintain this system for Howmet, and it has been so successful (reducing the number of manual interventions and the number of batches rejected by quality control) that it is now being more widely adopted within the company.
